A training system centered on core stabilization and spinal alignment that uses mat exercises and apparatus to improve body control and movement quality.
Pilates is a movement system rooted in Joseph Pilates's Contrology, built on six principles: Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breathing, and Flow. It starts with mat exercises and expands into resistance training on apparatus such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrel. From rehabilitation to performance, you progressively develop core strength and movement efficiency.
You're taking your first steps in Pilates. You consciously activate your abdominal muscles and recognize the neutral spine position. Following instructor guidance, you perform basic mat exercises and begin connecting breath to movement. You're introduced to the five foundational alignment principles: breathing, pelvic placement, rib cage placement, scapular movement, and head and neck placement.
What Comes Next
If you've checked off most of this list, you're ready to enter the Essential Mat stage, expanding your essential mat repertoire and integrating the six Contrology principles into your movements. Wells et al. (2012) found in their systematic review that anchoring centering and control as the starting point of each movement is key in early practice.
