The ability to select routes, acclimatize to altitude, manage gear, and maintain safety while walking and climbing through mountain terrain.
Hiking is a physical, technical, and judgment-based outdoor activity that covers safely moving through terrain ranging from well-maintained trails to high-alpine routes. You assess a route's distance and elevation gain to pick a path that matches your fitness, equip yourself with gear suited to the terrain and weather, and manage energy and hydration along the way. It starts with basic walking on beginner trails and expands to multi-day traverses, altitude acclimatization, and route pioneering. The SAC T1-T6 grading system provides the structural backbone for terrain-specific requirements.
You walk on well-marked, maintained trails (SAC T1) with a companion or guide. You prepare basic gear like hiking boots, a backpack, water, and snacks, and you check the weather before heading out. You complete hikes of 3-5km with up to 300m of elevation gain on flat or gentle slopes. You experience muscle soreness and fatigue afterward, but it's manageable.
What Comes Next
If you've checked off most of this list, you're ready to move into the SAC T1 Proficient (Regular Hiker) stage, where you independently select routes and take charge of pace management and gear. According to the NPS (2024) Hike Smart guidelines, the point where you actually pack the 10 Essentials and learn to use each one marks the start of independent hiking.
