제1원리 사고는 "원래 이렇게 해왔으니까"라는 관성을 거부하고, 문제의 근저에 있는 가정(Assumption)을 하나씩 벗겨내어 더 이상 분해할 수 없는 근본 진실(Fundamental Truth)에 도달한 뒤, 그 진실들을 토대로 해결책을 처음부터 구축하는 역량입니다. 아리스토텔레스가 "다른 어떤 것으로부터도 추론할 수 없는 출발점"으로 정의한 이래, 과학적 발견과 혁신적 문제 해결의 핵심 엔진으로 작동해 왔습니다. 유추(Analogy)가 기존 솔루션을 복제하는 것이라면, 제1원리 사고는 솔루션의 존재 이유 자체를 재질문합니다. 기존 관행에 의문을 제기하고 근본적으로 더 나은 방법을 설계하려는 모든 분야의 실무자에게 필수적인 사고 역량입니다.
문제를 접하면 과거 경험이나 주변 사례를 참고하여 해결하려 합니다. 기존 방식이 왜 그렇게 만들어졌는지 질문하기보다, "다른 곳에서 이렇게 했으니까"라는 유추(Analogy)에 의존합니다. 이 단계에서는 유추와 제1원리 사고의 차이를 처음 접하고, 자신의 판단에 검증되지 않은 가정이 포함될 수 있다는 것을 인식하기 시작합니다.
